In 1534-35 the Anabaptists took over Muenster. Waldeck raised an army and captured the town after a lengthy siege. Story goes when Waldeck asked the leader Jahn van Leiden during his trial how he should repay the costs of the siege and battle Jahn said stick me and the other two leaders in cages and charge a penny to all who come and see. In 1536 Jahn and two other leaders had the flesh removed from their bodies with hot pincers and their hearts pierced with red hot pokers. The remains were placed in the cages and hoisted up the side of the church tower... As late as 1585 some remains were still visible. The cages are still in place. |
