On Nov. 1 and 2, Dr. Jeffrey Forgang (translator of I.33 "The Medieval Art of Swordsmanship" and curator of the sword collection at the Higgins Museum) will be giving presentations on period fighting styles and manuals at the World Invitational Joust, down in Calafia (at the Poway Rodeo Grounds). He's a great guy, and he's very approachable. It was sure a good way to get some great details right from the source.

Plus, of course, there will be several interpreters from the Royal Armouries on hand (as well as other European museums) who are going to take part in the jousting.

If you're interested in attending, check out their website: www.WorldJoust.com

Dr. Forgeng also put out a translation of Joachim Meyer's German treatise from the 1570s. I think it sounds like a fabulous opportunity to experience real jousting, and to geek out with all the WMA people.

Tickets for the World Joust are on sale via Historic Enterprises (Jeffery/Tristan will be competing again this year!) for $25/person for the weekend. Such a deal!

Just as a follow up, some of the gang from my former Longsword class will be there to assist Dr. Forgang in his demonstrations (I am still trying to get in on that gig). In asking some of the more influencial members of the WMA community, his translation of Meyer is the one most highly recommended. The bibliography of that book is also kind of a who's who among swordsmanship books. I plan to be there with bells on. It has jousting, so no way I could even try to keep Sondra away.

Just a reminder, this event is coming up this weekend and there will be several of us out there to enjoy the joust (and cheer on Jeff Hedgecock - our 'reenactment grandpa', and to check out Dr. Jeffrey Forgang.

It's not a garbed event, just something fun to do on the weekend!

Seriously, we ended up at the joust at Casa de Fruta every weekend we went because the Krauts up there go to support 'Sir Henrick' (the German knight) and to bully the crowd into cheering too. I would NEVER do this at Corona, because the joust is just *different* there. But at Casa the folks putting on the joust are actually doing full contact, non-choreographed event including 'skills tests'. The person who wins is the person who does the best job at skills and tilting and they are in competition for an overall prize.

It's actually pretty cool.

Of course, there is still a lot of 'cheese factor’, including the squires fight and the follow up disciplining of the squire who is demonstrating ungentlemanly behavior: But at least they are showing that behavior like that was not tolerated in the tourney, instead of playing up the ‘bad boy’/Conan crap.

If you have an International Joust in your area, I would recommend checking it out. Nothing like watching some guy in armor flying ass-over-teakettle off the back of a charging horse...

Wow....that is all I can say. This event was so cool, Chris and I signed up to help Jeff and Gwen pull it off next year. All I can say is, if you can make it to this event next year - you should do so! It's not an 'in garb' event, but damn those guys kick some massive butt on horseback...

*boggles at the skill level required to take a linebacker style hit while on a moving animal and targeting a shield that is about the size of a piece of copy paper*

And the guys were all very cool, and personable. The horses were beautiful, the garb was fantastic and the swordplay was a blast to watch.

I believe they are going to be skipping the April event next year, but set your calendars now for the first weekend in November...
